Whiplash

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the neck, similar to the cracking of a whip. It most commonly occurs during rear-end auto accidents but can also result from sports injuries, falls, or other trauma. Whiplash can damage the muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs, and nerves in the cervical spine.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Symptoms may not appear immediately and can take hours or days to develop:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches, especially at the base of the skull
  • Dizziness
  • Pain in the shoulders or upper back
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms

Why Early Treatment Matters

Many people make the mistake of waiting to see if whiplash symptoms will resolve on their own. While mild cases may improve with time, untreated whiplash can lead to chronic neck pain, reduced range of motion, and long-term complications. Early chiropractic intervention can:

  • Prevent the development of scar tissue and chronic pain patterns
  • Help document your injuries for insurance purposes
  • Restore proper cervical spine alignment
  • Reduce inflammation and promote healing
  • Prevent long-term complications
